\n\nA jury awarded $9.25 million in damages after finding that The New York Times slandered a former Alabama college basketball player by inaccurately reporting that he was at the scene of a deadly shooting in Tuscaloosa.The jury delivered its verdict after a trial in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.
\n\nA spokesperson told The Associated Press that The New York Times was reviewing its legal options after losing the defamation case.
\n\nIn 2023, Kai Spears, who played for the University of Alabama men’s college basketball team, sued The New York Times after it published a report, referencing an individual familiar with the shooting investigation, that implied he was a passenger in a car linked to the incident.
\n\nThe New York Times reported that the person had spoken "on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters." Days later, the news outlet admitted its error in an editor's note and corrected the story.
