More than 1.5 million OCOOPA rechargeable hand warmers have been recalled after reports that their lithium-ion batteries can overheat and ignite, causing fires, burns and, in one case, a fatality.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall on Thursday.

According to the CPSC, the lithium-ion batteries in the recalled hand warmers can overheat and catch fire, posing a serious risk of burn injuries and death.

The company has received 1,480 reports of the hand warmers overheating, including 15 fires and 350 burn injuries. Among the reported incidents was the death of an 83-year-old consumer in San Diego, California, in February 2026.

The recall affects OCOOPA-branded rechargeable lithium-ion hand warmers, including models UT3053, UT3056, ZLS-118, ZLS-118S, ZLS-118D, H01 and H01(PD).

The dual-sided hand warmers were sold in a variety of colors and designs in two-packs that magnetically connect together and include a charging cable. Each unit features a USB-C charging port, adjustable heat settings with LED indicator lights, a hard plastic shell and a silicone lanyard.

The OCOOPA brand name is printed on the top of the devices, while the model number and three-digit batch number appear printed on the underside.

The recalled hand warmers were sold online through Amazon.com, Ocoopa.com, Ocoopa.net and Walmart.com between September 2018 and May 2026 for between $15 and $60. The products were manufactured in China.

OCOOPA Direct is offering affected consumers a full refund, either as an OCOOPA gift card or through the original method of payment. To receive a refund, consumers must write the word “RECALLED” on the hand warmer with a permanent marker and submit a photograph showing the marking, along with the product’s model number and three-digit batch number, through the company’s online recall portal.

Because the products contain defective lithium-ion batteries, consumers should not throw them in household trash, curbside recycling bins or standard battery recycling collection boxes. Instead, the batteries should be disposed of through a local household hazardous waste collection center or another approved disposal method in accordance with local and state regulations.

The CPSC is also encouraging consumers to report any additional incidents involving the recalled hand warmers through SaferProducts.gov.
